Conductivity based Capacitive deionization (CCDITM) with carbon-aerogel electrodes represents a novel process in purification of water and has merit due to its low scaling potential, easy operational conditions, electrostatic regeneration, and low voltage requirements. The objective of this process, CCDITM, to be introduced in Indian economy was not only to treat water but also remove arsenic, perchlorate, ammonia from water.

 

How does it work?

1. Purification

The purification system begins with removal of ions. Water passes between the electrodes; the ions present in the water get attracted to oppositely charged electrodes and pure water comes out from the system.

2. Regeneration

After some time, the electrodes get saturated and the system automatically changes the polarity and the ions attracted to the electrodes fall off.

3. Flush

The water is then flushed between the electrodes and the waste ions are flushed into the drain. The polarity is reversed back, and the purification process starts over again.

 

In simple terms, Water at low pressure moves through these electrodes, and a direct current at a low potential difference is supplied to remove contaminants through this process.

The process is not only cost efficient, but it also has several benefits such as:

  • Reduction in water wastage when compared with Reverse Osmosis (RO) Technology.
    Water wastage in RO is as high as 80% or more, whereas, the maximum water wastage in our CCDITM system is up to 20%. This results in long-term conservation of scarce resource of ground water.
  • Restoration of all essential minerals required by a human body as per WHO. In RO, all kinds of minerals, whether good or bad are removed from the water. However, with CCDITM, we ensure that the essential minerals are retained while harmful toxins are eliminated.
  • Low power consumption, thereby, saving energy and reduction in carbon emission.
  • Elimination of harmful chemicals and contaminants.
  • No pressure requirement.
